It’s been a bit windy the last couple of days so we decided to go some place were we could get out of the wind and do some fishing. We took the boat and Erik’s parents and headed up the canyon at Alcova. The fishing was non-stop action all day. We easily landed 100 rainbows. With the current and light poles they were a blast to catch!

Bates Creek

We try to make our trip to Bates Creek a yearly event, however, the spring weather dictates the quality of fishing each year.

The water was high, but very fishable today.  As we started fishing the kids (Samantha and Max) both started exploring right away.  There were muddy banks, caterpillars and snakes to be found!

We took home a few nice brookies for dinner and left behind plenty for the next group….
What it's all about

Bates Creek Canyon

A 40 minute hike into the canyon and not a peep from Samantha, fishing up the creek for 2 hours and not a peep from Samantha, Lunch in by the creek and not a peep from Samantha…. ¬†Gotta love this little trooper! ¬†Keep her fed and in clean pants and she just goes with the flow!! ¬†We spent most of the morning and afternoon at Bates Creek and caught some gorgeous brookies and rainbows. ¬†The water was already like it usually is in June, so it’s a good thing we went this early.

Floating the North Platte

Our good friend Ty Hallock is a river guide and an incredible artist. He graciously put aside today to take us and his daughter Taya out for a float trip. The weather looked like it might hold even though we have been having spring rain storms move through on a regular basis lately. When we got to the river there was a cool breeze, but forrunately the sun came out early and stayed with us for most of the day. It is amazing how much water you can cover and re-cover in boat. The day was filled with dozens of healthy active Rainbows and cutbows finding their way into our net!

Middle Fork

It was about a month later then usual but the fishing was fantastic. With all the above average snowpack and late spring the river was running like it usually does in late June not late July. Fishing was a bit slow from 8:30 till 10:00 on this morning,  but once the sun warmed the water the fish got more active and started hitting big dryflys.  It was one fish after another from 10:00 until 3:00 when arms were sore and a rough hour and a half hike back down the river and up the canyon trail to get back to the 4 Wheeler was still needed to make it back to civilization.

Fish Lake

We headed up to Dubois to go fly-fishing for big cutthroats.  We took Gordon and Scout with us this trip. We got to the lake on wednesday evening, in time to fish for a couple hours before dark. Erik got into several good fish when he first got into the float tube but the bite only lasted about a half hour before the fish shut off.  The next day was good fishing around a sunken island in the middle of the lake after it warmed up form a 38 degree overnight low temperature.  We kept 4 cutthroats for dinner and breakfast.  Their stomachs were completely filled with leeches.  After a good breakfast of bacon, fish and cantaloupe and some more fishing we headed back home around noon on friday.

Middle Fork (Outlaw Canyon)

We are amazed with Erik’s dad, Gordon, every time we go on a fishing or hunting trip with him. ¬†He is now 79 years old and has barely began to slow. ¬†We hiked into outlaw canyon today. ¬†It is at least a 750 foot drop into the canyon and in only a 1/4 of a mile, which is steep to say the least. ¬†We fished up the canyon for about 4 hours with a nice lunch of ¬†hot dogs over the fire. ¬†Fishing was amazing as usual in Middle Fork. ¬†We mainly used bead headed hares ears but were able to use some big dry flies with a bead head dropper after lunch with great success. ¬†The hike and drive out was uneventful with everything going smoothly ūüôā What an amazing place it is! ¬†Watch the video!

Outlaw Canyon

brown4 am is early!¬† We picked Erik’s dad Gordon up at 4:30 and left Casper, bound for the Middle Fork of the Powder River near Kaycee.¬† We arrived at our destination just in time for the sun to be high enough to keep us warm in the deep canyon.¬† The water was just the right height and just milky enough to offer spectacular fishing this warm sunny day.¬† We hiked a ways before beginning to fish so as not to worry about running into other fishermen, although the middle of the week usually fixes that little problem. rainbow

The day was absolutely wonderful!  The temperature was perfect and the fishing phenomenal.  Each of us caught dozens of rainbows and browns on medium weight fly rods with leach flies.  Every hole, every glide, every riffle had a trout lying in waiting for us to float that fly past their nose.  Each fish was fat and healthy and put up a good fight.  Click here to watch video!
