Jan Lake day 9

We started at Harper today,  it was very windy.  The fishing was ok, but the wind was getting tiring.  So we decided to hit some places that have produced fish in the past and would get us a little respite from the gails.  We went to MacMillan Point and anchored for a time.  The fish were definately not there.  We tried Black Rock next and within a minute or two we had our first bite.

After lunch we tried another part of McMillan Point and still had no luck, so Erik checked the map and decided to try a new place.  It was a chain of barren rock islands.  It turned out to not be good this time of year, but it is nice to try different places on days like this.

Jan Lake day 8

We went to the upper narrows and saw a group of guys we had seen in years past. They are a group from Colorado that comes up every year around the same time as us. It was another slower day, however we still caught plenty of fish and had a great day with plenty of sunshine.

Jan Lake 2011 day 6 & 7

Driving as far north as the roads will take us, we camp at Jan Lake.  In a place where there are only septic tanks and lake water for travelers during their stay, we are grateful for satellite technology to keep us in touch with the modern world.  The weather has been colder than we have experienced before.  However, now that the fire ban has lifted the true Canadian outdoorsmen’s laughter is as strong as ever as we listen to the ebb and flow of the conversations around their campfires.  We are stuck in camp due to the high winds and cold temperatures, but we will recover; and just have to stay an extra day or two :)

We drove to Flin Flon for a few hours to make our loss less miserable… Neat little town, good food- very rocky terrain.

Jan Lake 2011 day 5

Back at Harper today and we very likely caught 100 fish before noon.  Quite a windy day, but probably made for such good fishing.  We let the wind carry us across the bay over and over again while we concentrated on our lines for the slightest sign of a hit.  As we cooked lunch it became evident that the weather was changing.  Before we were through, it started to rain on us.  We finished eating on the boat under the awning.  As the rain continued, the wind died down.  We went back to fishing the shorelines, but the fish were not as stacked as they had been before lunch.  The temperature continued to fall as we fished, the rain stopped and a breeze replaced the strong winds.  When we got to shore we checked the forecast; it is going to get cold and wet!

Jan Lake 2011 day 4

One of our favorite spots is a 30 minute boat ride north west of camp. It is a place where we can usually fish without seeing another boat all day. We got to the narrows early this morning and had very nice weather. The fishing was not quite as fast as normal, but we still did well catching several dozen walleye before lunch. After lunch we focused on northerns for the rest of the day working around two different bays where we have done well in the past.

Jan Lake 2011 day 3

Today’s weather has been cooler and windy.  To get away from being blown around, we went to the first narrows where we would be protected.  We anchored and spent the day vertical jigging with minnows.  We skipped shore lunch and kept our fish for a dinner with sauteed peppers and onions, delicious!

Jan Lake 2011 day 2

Got out bright and early and headed right back to Harper.  We drifted with the breeze and stayed on big numbers of fish throughout the morning.  There are always boats within sight around this part of the lake, but we always have this bay to ourselves!  Erik hooked what we thought was going to be a nice northern late in the morning.  When the net was ready and the fish showed his colors, we quickly realized this was the biggest walleye either of us had ever caught at Jan Lake.  After getting him in the boat he measured 26 1/2 inches and weighed 6 1/2 pounds.  A fish of similar age in Wyoming would have easily been 11 or 12 pounds, but in this country it takes a long time to grow them big.

When we were ready for shore lunch, we headed to Dunsmore bay and set up on shore for a feast.  Fresh walleye, beans and cantaloupe were on the menu for this beautiful day as well as our first scratch on the new boat; one of the down sides to shore lunch.  We had hoped to look for northerns in Dunsmore after we ate, however there were two boats on our favorite spot (never before) so we headed back to Harper to finish the day catching walleyes.

Jan Lake 2011 day 1

We arrived at the lake around 10:30am.  First things first, we made camp and got the boat ready for action.  Once we got on the water we went to our normal first stop, Harper Island.  We were unsuccessful there, so we moved further down the island and found what we were looking for.  It was a short, but great day of fishing.

Pathfinder weekend

If you spent any time outdoors on Saturday you know it was about as miserable a day as you can get in the spring.  We took our friend Shane and his daughter Caitlin out early in the morning.  It was Caitlin’s birthday and we wanted her to catch a big rainbow!  What a day :(  we froze and the fishing was not the best we have had.  Of course being miserable never helps the fishermen make the right decisions about finding our prey.  We did accomplish our goal, however and by 9am, Caitlin had caught a couple fish and we could get the heck out of dodge!!  Sorry it was not the best day, Caitlin!

Sunday was a completely different type of day.  It started out windy and cold, but not even as cold as yesterday.  By 9:30 the wind died completely down and the lake was glass.  We caught quite a few fish and Max learned to use the net!  Crazy Wyoming weather…

Ice and bunnies

We haven’t had the best of luck with the ice the last couple weeks.  The weather has not cooperated with us with low pressure two weekends in a row, not to mention that it is getting toward late ice.  The fish are sluggish from lack of oxygen from this long, long winter.  Last weekend as well as yesterday only produced a few fish, albeit nice sized ones.  Our neice, Kylee, experienced her first ice fishing trip this weekend.  We were disappointed she didn’t catch one!

Today, after church, we picked up Max and Chad and went to Pathfinder looking for some cottontails for dinner.  There weren’t a ton of bunnies to be had, but we found enough.  Max shot a rifle for the first time by himself and “bagged” a rabbit of his own!
