Canada 2014

From sunshine and above average temps to snowing and well below average temps it was another great trip to Jan Lake. We had several 100+ fish days with terrific shore lunches each day. We fished for 8 days and as usual it felt more like two. Time flies when you’re having fun!

Canada and North Dakota

Last year we skipped going to Canada.  We just weren’t sure what to expect with Samantha.  We barely knew her.  What if she cried a lot, what if she couldn’t handle the cool days, what if she got sick???  Being new parents we had a lot of unsure-ities, and asked a lot of what-ifs.  In hindsight, we probably could have gone…  This kid is an outdoor girl through and through.  She is always happy out of doors and so are we!!  Here is a photo journal of the last 2 weeks.

Jan Lake 2010, day 9

We decided to make this our last fishing day  at Jan Lake.  We started the morning at Harper’s Bay.  It only took 20 minutes to realize this was not the spot this day.  We then went to the first narrows and caught a few, but they were not very big and we were still in need of a few take-home fish.  So, we went to the most constant  spot of the year, the Sandy Narrows.  It did not disappoint us!  We caught some very nice walleye and quite a few big northerns.  On the way back to camp, Michelle looked back on a squall that was hitting the Northern parts of the lake.  Lightning struck just west of where we had been fishing all afternoon.  A few minutes later black smoke was billowing from the strike.  Hopefully the rain later in the evening squashed this fire.

It was the warmest, sunniest day of the trip and was a very fitting finish to our great yearly Canada trip.

Jan Lake 2010, day 8

We headed straight for Sandy Narrows today.  We wanted to hit the walleye hard and stay out late.  We arrived and found there were two boats already fishing our spot, so we crossed the bay and anchored.  The morning was steady.  We were catching walleye between 15 and 18″ all morning.  Near noon the boats at the big rock went to shore lunch and we crossed the bay and began working back and forth casting 1/4 oz jigs.  We continued catching fish consistently until we decided to eat a little after 1pm.

After a relaxing meal of fried fish and bbq rib chips we hit the northern pike bay that had treated us so well just a few days earlier!  We had great luck with the pike again in this bay.  Many bites and several big northerns made it to our boat.

Back at camp we had a nice visit around the campfire with a couple from Alberta, Youp and Sharon.

Jan Lake 2010, day 7

We saw the Larson’s off early this morning and had a visit with the new neighbors before heading out on the water today.  We headed to Harper’s where we left fish biting the evening before.  The fishing was steady and we even caught a couple fish over 18″, but the majority were small so we decide to try a couple new places for Northerns.  We started in a bay called Dunsmore that we had fished in the past.  After catching a few we headed north of James island.  On the first cast Erik missed a fish.  On his second cast in this bay he hooked into a good one!  After a long fight we finally landed the fish.  He measured 38″ (97cm) and our scale read 14 pounds.  We hopped around a few more spots, but caught nothing significant, so we decided to head back to camp for a quiet evening.

Jan Lake 2010, day 6

Only the big guys went out today for the Larson family’s last day of fishing.  Since walleyes were found around Harpers yesterday that was the destination to try first.  Within a few short minutes of pulling into the bay a walleye was landed.  After that first walleye was caught another at least 150 others were landed in 6 hours of fishing.  3 walleyes were over 20″ with Josh landing the biggest at 22.5″.  It was a fun day of fast catching!

Jan Lake 2010, day 5

We decided to split up for the morning bite today.  Josh and Randy went to the narrows and the rest went to Harper’s Island.  It took us a few minutes to figure out the wind and the fish, but we were quickly catching walleye consistently.

Today we saw a black bear that was alive!  There were two actually.  At first Erik heard a strange sound and found that two black bears were fighting at the back of Harper’s.  One chased the other off and 10 of 15 minutes later the first emerged and began feeding for some time along the shore.

Watch a video clip of the bear

Near lunch time we headed North to find The others in the Narrows.  After meeting up we discovered neither group started keeping fish for shore lunch.  Only in Canada can you make that mistake and rectify it within 20 minutes!!!  8 fish later we were at shore lunch enjoying another morning’s catch.

Jan Lake 2010, day 4

After a  nice breakfast of eggs, bacon and toast, we headed strait for the narrows.  It was a magnificent day.  The weather was perfect, and we were catching walleye one after the other.  By noon we were quite ready for a feast of fresh walleye!!  We approached one of our favorite islands for shore lunch, we found the remains of a black bear that had perished the previous fall.  As this was one of our yearly spots we know this was a fall death.  After searching the remains and sharing versions of how he may have died, Michelle found the sure answer.  A glint of green caught her eye and a jacket from a bullet was lying within the piles of bones and fur.

After lunch we stayed in a bay near the island and began throwing spoons for northerns.  It was a spectacular afternoon for pike!  We caught more than could be counted.

We finished the day in the narrows and caught walleye until we could fish no more.

Back at camp we enjoyed some bbq chicken on the grill.

Jan Lake 2010, day 3

The good Lord ALWAYS watches out for us!!!  This morning Larson’s rented a boat.  Randy and 12 year old Chance jumped in and followed the rest of us, heading for one of our favorite spots for the day.  After hitting the big water, Josh and Jeremaiah realized the smaller boat was no longer behind us.  We stopped and stared back for a moment and noticed they were stopped and facing sideways.  As we headed back we realized, with heavy hearts that the boat now only contained one passenger.  Upon approaching the vessel we found Randy in the water with a life vest under each arm.  It was a very close call.  Randy was unable to swim any further and if it were not for young chance keeping his head and making sure to get life preservers to his father….

After this harrowing experience we all made it to the narrows and had a great day of fishing.  There were many firsts for the Larson family today.  And many blessings for all of us.

Jan Lake 2010, day 2

More torrential rains today.  Erik, Michelle and Randy headed out on the water around 8am.  The others didn’t want to get drenched and freeze.  The fishing was tough, it took us a while to find a spot that was worth sitting on.  In the end we ended up with some sunny skies and a not-so-amazing day of fishing.  But, we had enough in the live-well for a great fish fry back at camp!!!  It was still a great day of vacationing on Jan Lake!!
