Jan Lake 2011 day 3

Today’s weather has been cooler and windy.  To get away from being blown around, we went to the first narrows where we would be protected.  We anchored and spent the day vertical jigging with minnows.  We skipped shore lunch and kept our fish for a dinner with sauteed peppers and onions, delicious!

Jan Lake 2011 day 2

Got out bright and early and headed right back to Harper.  We drifted with the breeze and stayed on big numbers of fish throughout the morning.  There are always boats within sight around this part of the lake, but we always have this bay to ourselves!  Erik hooked what we thought was going to be a nice northern late in the morning.  When the net was ready and the fish showed his colors, we quickly realized this was the biggest walleye either of us had ever caught at Jan Lake.  After getting him in the boat he measured 26 1/2 inches and weighed 6 1/2 pounds.  A fish of similar age in Wyoming would have easily been 11 or 12 pounds, but in this country it takes a long time to grow them big.

When we were ready for shore lunch, we headed to Dunsmore bay and set up on shore for a feast.  Fresh walleye, beans and cantaloupe were on the menu for this beautiful day as well as our first scratch on the new boat; one of the down sides to shore lunch.  We had hoped to look for northerns in Dunsmore after we ate, however there were two boats on our favorite spot (never before) so we headed back to Harper to finish the day catching walleyes.

Jan Lake 2011 day 1

We arrived at the lake around 10:30am.  First things first, we made camp and got the boat ready for action.  Once we got on the water we went to our normal first stop, Harper Island.  We were unsuccessful there, so we moved further down the island and found what we were looking for.  It was a short, but great day of fishing.

Pathfinder weekend

If you spent any time outdoors on Saturday you know it was about as miserable a day as you can get in the spring.  We took our friend Shane and his daughter Caitlin out early in the morning.  It was Caitlin’s birthday and we wanted her to catch a big rainbow!  What a day 🙁  we froze and the fishing was not the best we have had.  Of course being miserable never helps the fishermen make the right decisions about finding our prey.  We did accomplish our goal, however and by 9am, Caitlin had caught a couple fish and we could get the heck out of dodge!!  Sorry it was not the best day, Caitlin!

Sunday was a completely different type of day.  It started out windy and cold, but not even as cold as yesterday.  By 9:30 the wind died completely down and the lake was glass.  We caught quite a few fish and Max learned to use the net!  Crazy Wyoming weather…

late season turkey blues

I expect the birds to come my way

as I sit near their roost at the break of day.

I call, they answer in my direction you see

indicating they might just come toward me.

Toms and hens fly out of the trees

landing on the ground they begin to feed.

Their heads are turned, the decision is made

sometimes those darn birds just go the other way!
