Anniversary trip Day 2

Monday morning was not what we expected the fishing was slow and spotty.  The real reason is we are spoiled, if we aren’t catching one fish after another, we say it is a slow day.  Anyone would have loved to catch the fat healthy gills and crappie we were pulling though this ice this day.  In the end, it was really a good day with many large gills and several 12+ inch crappie.   Michelle even iced a 14 incher!

Anniversary trip Day 1

Once again the weather has different plans for us.  So, with the big storm just hammering the Midwest, we packed our things and headed for Nebraska to fish for a couple of days to let South Dakota and Minnesota dig themselves out.  We didn’t expect this to be a wildlife viewing trip, but we did run into a magnificent herd of bighorn sheep near Fort Robinson, NE.

We made it to Rushville in time to get a motel and still be on the ice for a couple of hours of fishing.  It was an incredible 2 hours.  We landed several 9+ inch gills and a few crappies.  We decided we had better get another nights stay so we could fish all day on Monday.

Lost Soldier

It has been several years since we last fished Lost Soldier.  We were eager to see what the small reservoir had to hold for us this day.  In the past we had pulled some mighty big rainbows through the ice, but you never know what you are going to find when out fishing.  Our first few fish were nice, but not the giants we remember from the past.  However, we were not to be disappointed!  Erik eventually pulled a 4 3/4 pound fish on to the ice.  The coyotes were talkative all morning and the winds stayed calm.  We stayed till lunch time before heading home.

Crazy Rainbow pheasant hunt

We wanted to take a trip to Nebraska to do some ice fishing for the weekend, but the weather did not look too promising, so we called the Ugly Bug Fly shop and booked a hunt for the Crazy Rainbow pheasant farm.  We arrived shortly before 1pm and checked in.  We learned that there had been several hunts lately and many birds released.  We love to hear this, it means hunting will be much more exciting with all those birds out there.  As in many a bird hunt, the first few birds got away, the boys really just needed to warm up, because the rest of the day was filled with great shots and amazing retrieves.

Dome Rock

Our first ice trip of the season!  We got up bright and early Saturday morning, although not early enough.  We made it to the pond by 7:15 and found a good 5 inches of thickness.  Erik drilled several holes and within 5 minutes, Michelle had a hit.  We set up in about 10 foot of water and jigged with small jigs that worked horizontally.  After an hour or so we worked our way closer to the dam, where Erik had consistent hits for the remainder of the morning.  We pulled a dozen or so cutthroats through the ice.  All very healthy, fat, trout.
